New Sherlock Holmes Books
ACD’s estate has authorised the publication of a series of books dealing with the teenage Holmes, we start off with him age fourteen and follow him as he learns his deductive skills and *shock horror* attempts relationships with girls. The author, a certain Andrew Lane, claims to be a super-fan… well, if that’s the case then why does he feel the need to sexualise Holmes? Regardless of how you view him, Holmes doesn’t need to be sexualised in any way shape or form – leave him be, he doesn’t need a doomed love affair to settle his view on women he just needs to be Holmes.
Also, Holmes is going to have an American tutor to teach him all the things he knows (boxing, fencing etc…) – I’m sorry, I know it’s generally thought that we Brits can’t archive anything unless we have one of our American friends to guide us but it’s just as bad as the suggestion that Holmes learned all his deductive skills through the Pinkerton Agency rather than just being a particularly clever, observant person.
They’re being published by Macmillian Children’s Books from spring next year, apparently they end with the famous meeting between Holmes and Watson from STUD. I’ll probably give them a go, despite my obvious misgivings about them but at least they will introduce Holmes to a younger audience but then again, I’m not sure what that will achieve since a lot of people discover the stories when they are in their early teens… which happens to be the target audience for these stories.
