News Round Up

Forgive the lack of posts recently, I’ve been very busy with work and flat hunting. Hopefully I will have found somewhere to live in March and will be blogging about Sherlock Holmes in the warm, without a leaking roof… albeit away from the spiritual home of Holmes on Baker Street (yes I live just off Baker Street, no it’s not that great a place to live.)

Alistair Duncan talked to the Croydon Guardian about his new book, ‘Close to Holmes’. Don’t forget he’s signing copies of the book at the Waterstones in Croydon on the 14th March. Also coming soon will be a review of his latest book.

The New York Times publishes a correction to their article ‘Is that You, Sherlock’, they mistakenly attributed a describe of Watson to Holmes.

Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law talk to MTV about the relationship between Holmes and Watson, the character of Irene Adler and other bits about the filming.

It was also revealed that clips from ‘Sherlock Holmes’ would be shown at the Oscars in a new section highlighting upcoming films. Might be worth staying up for so put 22nd February in your diary.

Finally, a new picture was published on various websites showing Holmes, Watson and Irene Adler together.

Honouring his Image

Portsmouth is famous for many things, but one thing that is relevant to Holmesians is that it’s the location of Conan Doyle’s first practice and where he created Sherlock Holmes. It’s now the home of the extremely well put together exhibition of Richard Lancellyn Green’s Holmes collection (albeit with an unbearably annoying ‘play’ staring Irene Adler, Holmes and Watson trying to solve a case…)

They are now hoping to join with the likes of Edinburgh, London, Switzerland, Russia and Japan in getting a Sherlock Holmes statue put in the city. They’re currently looking for private investors to put up the money to place a statute at the location of ACD’s first practice.

I wonder what sort of image they’ll go for, although they all seem to have certain stereotypical poses – the deerstalker, the pipe…

Holmes outside Baker Street tube station… which incidentally, isn’t actually on Baker Street but on Marylebone Road, they should have put it outside the other entrance which is on Baker Street! You would have thought since this is the Sherlock Holmes Society of London’s statue they wouldn’t have gone with the thing that Holmes never wore… ah well, nevermind.

Statue in Karuizawa, Japan

My favourite one, it might be the more traditional view but I love the craftsmanship and the pose.

Statue at Meiringen, Switzerland. Not to keen on the post for this one, sort of looks like Holmes is going “yeah, it’s big.”

My second favourite, because it’s the only one that includes Watson. This is the one outside of the British Embassy in Russia, and the guy sitting in the middle is my all time favourite Holmes Vasily Livanov.

First look at Dr Watson

I was on the right track with my thoughts that Downey Jr. was merely in disguise, today Just Jared has photographs up of Jude Law dressed as Dr Watson. Holmes is certainty looking a bit more dapper, just hope that RDJ has a shave ;-)

Sherlock Holmes or Charlie Chaplin?

I’m assuming that Holmes is in disguise in this picture, if not… I’m more worried than I was before.

This is from the movie site ‘Just Jared’ which has a few other pictures of Downey Jr in costume.
